Cristóbal de Morales: Super Lamentationes Hieremiae Prophetae
The Jeremiah Lamentations, which form part of the Christian liturgy, have developed over successive generations since antiquity until the present day. They are traditionally performed during Holy Week. On this recording by Capella de Ministrers they are set to music by one of the foremost composers of the Spanish Renaissance, Cristóbal de Morales, with polyphonic vocals accompanied by vihuelas de arco (an early type of viola), and arrangement first used by the Emperor Charles V’s Royal Chapel Choir.
Translation into English of the sleeve notes by Kathryn Phillips-Miles and Simon Deefholts
