The Revolt of the Brotherhoods, or Guilds, took place in the Kingdom of Valencia over a four-year period between 1519 and 1523, causing great upheaval throughout the region. The rebellion was the result of long-standing tensions between a burgeoning bourgoisie and a declining aristocracy, which became accentuated with the merging of the thrones of Castille, Navarre and Aragón (the latter including Valencia and Catalonia) and the expansion of an empire encompassing Flanders, Burgundy and the Kingdoms of Sicily and Naples. This compilation celebrates the music of the period, ranging from military marches to celebratory dance, performed by Valencia’s outstanding early music ensemble .
