The prisoner reveals himself as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, a former member of Federico García Lorca’s student theatre troupe, La Barraca. As it becomes clear that he is to face a firing squad at dawn, Rafael confesses his relationship with Lorca to his captor, and entrusts him with a mission to rescue some hidden manuscripts in order to preserve them for future generations.
